Cockfighting in the Phillipines – A Deadly Billion Dollar Industry

VICE hits the streets of the Philippines, visiting both cockpits and hatcheries, to get an inside look into cockfighting, one of the world’s most controversial blood sports.

Cockfighting (sabong), the six thousand year-old spectator sport, has been transformed by the Philippines into a billion-dollar industry. Sabong is legal in the Philippines, meaning participation and betting can take place in public. There are about 2,500 cockpits in the country, several being high-capacity stadiums, and an estimated 30 million roosters die in the ring every year. The practise has drawn fire from anti-gambling and animal welfare groups internationally, but Filipinos overwhelmingly reject calls to outlaw sabong. According to some, such a ban would spark a revolution. We travel through the region to witness first-hand just how entrenched cockfighting is in Filipino culture.

  3. Cockfighting in the Philippines is very ancient, way before Spanish colonization. Chicken actually came from the Philippines, then it was brought to the Roman Empire via the Silk Road, then the Romans brought chickens to Europe, then Europeans brought it to the New World. It explains why there is no mention of chicken in the Old Testament as a kosher bird(even though it's one of the most kosher bird) , because there was no Roman Empire in the time of Moses. It was only later mentioned in the New Testament as the rooster crowed when Peter denied Jesus 3x.

  4. First witnessed "COCKFIGHTING" in my parents ancestral villages of Barkur and Mabukala in State of Karnataka in India. Later over the decades having visited 81 country's across the Globe could apply for a "PhD" course in the sport of Cockfighting having first hand seen the legalized version of the sport in Manila in the Philippines and in Vang Vieng in Laos.Have seen numerous other illegal cockfights in Bali in Indonesia and in India. This is a excellent documentary and vividly takes the viewer into the thick of cock fighting action in the Philippines. Reminds me on my own night out in a Cockfighting coliseum in Manila in 1995. Ahoy ! Read my blog on cockfighting :- https://cockfightinglegalandillegal.blogspot.com/

  5. My family and I use to fight roosters back in the hollars and I was really young. I got older and I look now and there's no way I could do that again. I'm too much of a animal lover

  6. Guess we are all hypocrites.
I grew up with this as a norm, thus the sight of it doesnt shake me.
Bull fighting in Spain tho, i find it brutal. I guess it's just a matter of perspective.

One does not make us any better than the other. You eat fried chicken, so do i.
    Everyone's guilty

  7. Wow I would have say that His Accent was The Clearest I've ever heard Even though it's Hard diction
